Cape Palliser

Kia Ora!  Cape Palliser Lighthouse was built in 1897 and is owned and operated by Maritime New Zealand.  The light was originally fueled by oil, then replaced by an electric one powered by a local diesel generator in 1954 and was fully automated in 1986 and is managed from a control room in Wellington.  There are 250+ steps to reach the base of the lighthouse, which offers spectular views of the Cape. On the roadside, there are many stops to look at the North Island's largest resident breeding colony of New Zealand fur seals.  It was absolutley amazing being within a couple of metres of the seals.
Before beading back to Martinborough for dinner, we drove around to look at the Hau Nui Wind Farm in Wairarapa.

Thanks for visiting,
Sue.
